The New Year is beginning and it’s time to focus on eating locally grown and raised produce. When I was a little girl, we always had a large garden as did the neighbours. We preserved and shared food and used it almost like currency. We used it to nurture the sick, commune with neighbours, welcome a guest, finalize a business deal, celebrate a birth, mourn the dead, bond a family and connect a community. Our own food was the catalyst that brought us together, it created a holistic healthy lifestyle and made a community out of a cluster of houses – local food is good.
